Hydrocarbons extracted from shale rock, the source rock for conventional oil and gas reservoirs, is a rapidly expanding area in the Continental United States and increasingly globally. In the last decade it has grown from small regional developments to fundamentally change the shape of the gas industry in the United States such that the US has gone from importing gas to being an active exporter of LNG. Oil and Gas production from shales is a growing percentage of domestic US production and plays an ever-important part in energy supply diversification.

The banner of unconventional oil is increasingly incorrect especially as the industry has to apply new technological processes in increasingly challenging and remote locations to find and develop conventional targets. Underlying the exploitation of oil from shales is not that different from conventional development however the underlying value drivers and phases of development have to be interpreted very differently from those in conventional reservoir exploitation and we explain this in more detail on our shale oil primer pages.
